Britain has dropped down the rankings of the best European countries for retirees in 2020.

The United Kingdom ranked 30th as the best retirement location compared to 17th place in 2019 on Blacktower Financial Management Group’s list of Europe’s best and worst countries for retirees in 2020.

Finland took the top spot as the best country in Europe for retirement in 2020, followed by Slovenia and Spain.

The Financial Planning network updated their 2019 retirement report to reveal the best (and worst) European countries for retirement in 2020, using weighted metrics of cost of living, crime rates, life expectancy, property prices, and population age.

To calculate the index, the company first normalised the data categories individually from 0 to 1 and then summed the results.

Serbia had the lowest house prices on average across Europe.

Italy had the largest population of over-65s.

Switzerland topped the list for highest life expectancy.

The Ukraine had the lowest cost of living across Europe.

Slovenia had the lowest crime rate with less than half the rate reported for the UK.
